Male guppies carry the colour. A group of five gives you a tank that reads as a display piece rather than a collection of individuals, and at R28 each against R30 for a single they are the cheapest way to get a tank looking good.

Please read this before ordering: male guppies are territorial towards other males. They do not fight constantly, but they will chase, nip fins and establish a loose hierarchy. For that reason a group of five males wants a 90-litre-plus tank, heavily planted, with sightlines broken up by wood or rock. In a small or sparsely planted tank they will stress each other.

If you want guppies that simply get along, choose the female group instead. If you want the colour and can give them the space, this is the better-looking option.

Care

• Water: 22-28°C, pH 6.8-7.8. Very tolerant of hard water, which suits Cape Town tap water well.
• Tank: Minimum 20 litres per guppy. Males need 90 litres plus and heavy planting.
• Diet: Quality flake daily plus live or frozen food.
• Breeding: Livebearers, giving birth to free-swimming fry.

Stock note: the larger option is 10 fish plus 1 free, so you receive 11 guppies at the price of 10. Stock is limited by what each shipment can safely carry, and we cap group numbers accordingly.
