About this product

The Platinum Ramirezi is a pale, platinum-coloured form of the Ramirezi dwarf cichlid. ‘Platinum’ is an aquarium trade name for a selectively bred colour form rather than a separate species.

Care is the same as for the German Blue Ram: warm, soft, slightly acidic water in a mature planted aquarium, kept with small peaceful tankmates.

Note: a representative photograph has not yet been sourced for this colour form, so no image is shown. Individual fish vary in colouration.

Full care requirements are in the Care Guide tab.

Care Guide
DifficultyIntermediate
Temperature25-28 C
pH6.0-7.0
GH2-8 dGH
KH1-5 dKH
TDS50-150 ppm
Min Tank Size60+ litres
DietOmnivorous — quality micro-pellets, flakes and frozen foods like bloodworm and brine shrimp.
CompatibilityPeaceful dwarf cichlid, well-suited to planted community tanks with small tetras, rasboras and other gentle fish.
SetupSoft, slightly acidic water with plants, driftwood and caves. Gentle filtration with a low flow.
Care LevelSensitive to water quality and temperature swings — weekly 20-25% partial water changes with stable parameters.
Scientific NameMikrogeophagus ramirezi
TemperamentPeaceful but shy dwarf cichlid. May nip the fins of slow-moving, long-finned tankmates, so keep away from bettas and angelfish.
Max Size5-7 cm (2-2.75 in)
Lifespan5-8 years in captivity when water conditions stay stable
GroupingForms a pair. Keep a single pair, or a group of 6 or more so one male establishes a dominant pair. Do not keep two males on their own.
AvoidBoisterous or long-finned tankmates such as bettas, angelfish and tiger barbs, which will bully a slow-moving dwarf cichlid.
PlantsDense planting, driftwood, leaf litter and small caves. Needs plenty of cover to feel secure.
DimorphismMales show a larger, more distinct black humeral spot and a stronger red eye; females are smaller and paler with a less defined spot.
BreedingCave-spawning pair. Needs soft, warm, acidic water and a sheltered cave; both parents are dedicated brooders.
